From Conversation to Commitment

The 2026 NYEC D.C. Summit is off to a strong start—with exactly the kinds of conversations we need to be having about youth employment and advancement.
We opened the Summit with From Conversation to Commitment: Building Sustainable Employer Partnerships That Deliver Long-Term Results, bringing together youth workforce professionals, researchers, and employers to explore an important question:
What does it really take to build an employer partnership that lasts—and creates meaningful value for both young people and employers?
The conversation moved well beyond hiring. We talked about what it takes to recruit young talent, create the conditions for them to succeed and stay, and build pathways for continued development and advancement.
Several important themes emerged:
- Start with the market, not the program. Understand where demand is moving, how jobs and skills are changing, and where opportunities for young people are emerging.
- Understand the employer’s challenge. Strong partnerships begin by listening to what employers are trying to solve—not by leading with what we want them to support.
- Think beyond hiring. Recruitment is only the beginning. Retention, development, workplace culture, and advancement are essential to long-term success for young people and employers.
- Bring the right people to the table. Employers and HR leaders, researchers, workforce and community partners, educators, and young people each bring a critical perspective. We need all of these voices to build pathways that work.
- Build toward shared value. The strongest employer partnerships become part of an employer’s talent strategy while creating meaningful career pathways and economic opportunity for young people.
Thank you to Yustina Saleh of the Burning Glass Institute, Elizabeth Kohm of the SHRM Foundation, and Josh Sturgill of the Submarine Industrial Base Program Office for bringing such valuable and complementary perspectives—and to everyone in the room who contributed their experiences, questions, and ideas.
This was a strong way to begin the Summit and, more importantly, it generated the kind of dialogue we need to continue if we are serious about improving youth employment, retention, and advancement.
Through NYEC’s Youth Champion Employer Coalition, we are committed to continuing these conversations and bringing the right partners together to turn them into action. Because it isn’t simply about getting more employers to the table. It’s about bringing the right people to the table, understanding the challenges we are trying to solve together, and building partnerships that deliver lasting value for young people and employers
