NYEC Visits New Orleans
During her recent trip to New Orleans as part of an Employer Engagement project, Emily Ingram, the Special Projects Manager at NYEC, had the privilege of visiting organizations doing incredible work for the community. High on her list was meeting Bernadette Lucas, the Executive Director of Liberty’s Kitchen.
Liberty’s Kitchen, situated just 10-minutes from the heart of New Orleans, has been a safe space for young adults who have been neglected or criminalized for over 15 years.
During the visit, Bernadette shared their inspiring history and commitment to providing young people with workforce training, wraparound services, and a supportive community. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Liberty’s Kitchen has remained resilient. Its doors have stayed open to young people looking to advance their careers and lives – whether that be by providing culinary and hospitality training or by offering whatever assistance is needed to achieve their version of success.
During the tour, Emily and Bernadette were accompanied by both alumni and new trainees, who eagerly showcased their personal and professional achievements. The moment they stepped into the spacious, professional-grade kitchen, the enticing aroma of jambalaya and andouille sausage filled the air as students perfected the art of traditional New Orleans cuisine.
As the tour concluded, Emily’s appetite had been thoroughly whetted. She had a wonderful time visiting Liberty’s Kitchen and couldn’t wait to share the captivating pictures from her visit. If you happen to be in the New Orleans area, a visit to Liberty’s Kitchen comes highly recommended!
