Interview with NYEC Youth Advisory Council
NYEC’s Inaugural Youth Days in Washington, D.C. had an incredible turn out of young people from all over the country. The youth and young adults’ sessions were a huge success, with over 30 young advocates, leaders, and thought leaders in attendance. The second day of the conference afforded attendees the opportunity to meet with a variety of people on Capitol Hill, to discuss the importance of supporting Opportunity Youth. Three of NYEC’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC) members, Josh Morrow, Essence Gray, and Kendi Caldwell were in attendance and contributed greatly to the event. These three leaders assisted with several aspects of the convening, including sitting on a youth panel about Good Jobs, leading peer discussions about pressing topics (Youth Employment, Gun Violence, and Mental Health), and making connections among the other young people in the room. Read what Josh, Essence, and Kendi had to say about the event.
What would you say was the highlight of the event for you?
Essence: The highlight for me was being able to speak for a generation and generations to come. Also meeting all the youth with like minds.
Josh: The highlight of the event for me was meeting other like-minded youth from around the country.
Kendi: My highlight of the event would be just meeting a bunch of resilient young people and watching everyone openly share their stories.
What did you think of your meetings on the Hill? Was the experience different from what you expected?
Essence: Being able to go to the White House and advocate was a dream come true. My goal was to change mindset if I couldn’t change a law.
Josh: I thought the meeting was a great experience, not too many people get the chance to advocate for what they believe in at such a young age.
Kendi: The meetings on the Hill were definitely different than I expected. I thought it would be really intimidating but it was actually cool to watch the congress people being impressed by how young I was and advocating for issues I believe in. Would you attend the event again?
Essence: I most definitely would attend and start a nonprofit to become a member, to send other youth through.
Josh: Yes, and I plan to try to attend every year.
Kendi: I would definitely attend the event if I have the chance. It was really inspiring and informative.
What would you tell other young people when it comes to getting involved in advocacy?
Essence: Start with your local community and see what needs to be fixed and gather up like minded individuals to advocate on behalf of your local neighborhood.
Josh: You don’t need a big platform or a high position. You just need the heart, willpower, and dedication. Furthermore, age doesn’t matter- advocacy can start in a class fighting for fairness and equality; all it takes is some passion.
Kendi: My advice to other young people would be just do it. Fight for what you believe. And if you’re a little shy or scared to, surround yourself with people who will uplift you to.
Thank you, Josh, Essence, Kendi, and all the young people who attended this event. We look forward to staying connected!
