NYEC June 2025 Newsletter

NYEC Monthly Policy Updates

The Department of Labor recently announced that it would be closing Job Corps centers across the nation. Since then, the Department has shared guidance over email, which can be found here, to Job Corps operators as they begin to adhere to the Department’s notice. A judge ordered to halt the suspension of Job Corps centers and scheduled a hearing for June 17. NYEC remains concerned about the impact of Job Corps centers closing, as it will mean more than 25,000 young people will have their education, training, and housing abruptly discontinued. We are tracking the Administration’s actions closely and will share updates as they come out.

The White House recently released the President’s full budget request. The budget request calls for drastic changes to education and workforce development programs that support opportunity youth – including eliminating and consolidating crucial programs. These cuts threaten the existence of our public workforce system and youth workforce programs. It is more important now than ever to contact your Members of Congress TODAY to advocate for programs that impact opportunity youth. Use this template to contact your Members of Congress!

NYEC’s Hill Highlights

NYEC has been busy on Capitol Hill! In April, the Federal Policy team held 26 Congressional meetings, and 2 in May. The team advocated for WIOA reauthorization, increased appropriations for opportunity youth, and the Bipartisan Opportunity Youth Caucus. Congressional offices have told us they want to hear from YOU! If you are interested in meeting with your members of Congress to advocate for your organization and opportunity youth, the NYEC is here to help connect you. Contact our Policy Coordinator, Lindsey Smith (lindsey.smith@nyec.org), for assistance setting up a meeting, prepping for the meeting, and attending the meeting with you upon request.
